Description: 1942 oil on canvasboard by Nellie G. Shaner Sproull (Mrs. John T. Sproull) depicting Atlantic City from Margate, NJ. 8 x 10 inch oil painting in untouched condition.Sproull was a Jersey Shore American Impressionist, from Atlantic City, later living in Margate. She’d studied at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.This is a beautiful gem of a plein air painting. Paintings of Atlantic City rarely appear on the market. The only thing I could find to somewhat compare this painting to was an unsigned oil by Joseph Sachs (see Askart for that).Nellie Sproull was a Member of various art organizations such as the Arts and Crafts Department of the Atlantic City Women’s Research Club (ACWRC). She presented programs on painting and exhibited with the group. The ACWRC wasn’t exactly the WPA, but it was similar. In the 1930’s, their art group, including Mrs. Sproull, exhibited series’ of paintings in Atlantic City High School. One theme was “Golden September” (1938 exhibition).Sproull was also a Member of the League of South Jersey Artists (LSJA). That wasn’t a Women’s Club, but they worked with the New Jersey Federation of Women’s Clubs, which had an Art Department, to celebrate American Art Week (Nov.1-7) and exhibit paintings. In 1943, the LSJA had their American Art Week exhibition at the Columbus Hotel in Atlantic City, and Nellie Sproull’s work was included in that show.Mrs. Sproull had lived in Arlington, NJ after marrying in 1919. The Sproulls met through church, where Mr. Spoull was a leader in the Presbyterian group, Christian Endeavor. After her husband passed in 1930, she moved back to Atlantic County, living at 102 South Rumson Avenue in Margate with her brother Henry and sister Ada.I take it that Nellie Sproull was an affluent woman, as her husband had been President of Coal and Iron National Bank of the City of New York. They lived at 35 Grand Place in Arlington, and also at 17 Bronson Avenue in Green Knolls, NY, between Eastchester and Scarsdale.
