The surrounding elements symbolise the importance of the euro for ordinary people (represented by a family group), for the financial world (the Eurotower), for trade (a ship), for industry (a factory) and for the energy sector and research and development (two wind turbines). The designer's initials, "AH", can be found (if looked closely) between the ship and the Eurotower. Along the top and bottom edges of the inside of the coin are the country of issue and the years "2002 - 2012", respectively. The coin will be issued by all eurozone countries. The outer ring of the coin represents the 12 stars of the European Union.
