The Five Lectures Contained within this sealed set are: Abraham's Creation Drama: Hugh Nibley discusses how Abraham was an ordinary man who held no office and worked no miracles and yet was was one of the greatest minds of the last forty centuries. Nibley discusses Abraham’s connection to the temple and gives an overview of the ancient temple. He also shows how the Book of Abraham answers what Nibley calls the “terrible questions”: Where do I come from? Why am I here?, How does the real universe figure in the gospel? How did it all begin, and how will it all end? “Nibley argues that the vision given to Abraham in the Book of Abraham contains stage directions indicating that this vision is dramatized, and the Book of Abraham includes the script. Hugh Nibley received his Ph.D in History from the University of California, Berkeley in 1939. He is emeritus professor of Ancient Scripture at Brigham Young University. He is a gifted scholar, educator, and lecturer who has been delighting and motivating Latter-day Saints for decades, a prolific writer, a keen and witty observer, and a relentless critic the ‘worldly, he has led church members of all ages to a deeper understanding of and commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ. A History of the Joseph Smith Papyri and Book of Abraham: John Gee recounts the history of the Joseph Smith Papyri, their discovery, travels, and eventual translation. Particular attention is devoted to the reconstruction of the papyri and their relationship to the Book of Abraham. The origin and contents of the Book of Abraham and Kirtland Egyptian Papers are also discussed. John Gee received a Ph.D. in Egyptology from Yale University. He has worked as a research assistant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and as an assistant instructor at Yale University. He is currently (1999) an assistant research professor of Egyptology at Brigham Young University. The Ancient Owners of the Joseph Smith Papyri: Although much attention has been paid to these who possessed the Joseph Smith Papyri in modern times, relatively — little study has been done about the ancient owners of the papyri. This lecture examines the ancient owners. The world in which they lived, and their contact with the Book of Abraham. (See previous John Gee biography.) Abrahamic Lore in Support of The Book of Abraham: Stories about Abrahani‘ circutated in ancient times and continued into the medieval period. Many of these accounts were then lost and have come to light only recently. John Tvedtnes examines several such stories—ranging from creation accounts to the attempted sacrifice of Abraham—and shows how they support the Book of Abraham. John A. Tvedtnes’s B.A. is in Anthropology. He also has an MLA. in Linguistics and an M.A. in Middle East Studies (Hebrew), all from the University of Utah. John has done graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is associate director of research for FARMS. Appreciating Hypocephali as Works of Art and Faith: Michael Lyon examines the importance and significance of hypocephali as works of art and expressions of religious belief. Facsimile 2, associated with the Book of Abraham, belongs to this class of documents. Lyon illustrates that hypocephali symbolize the sacred center of the universe, expressed in facsimile 2 as well as in the shield of Achilles and the mandala tradition. Michael Lyon received a B.A. in Fine Art and Asian Studies from Brigham Young University. He has worked in several museums, but his greatest joy was in the opportunity to paint the Denver Temple Annex mural. He has been illustrating The Collected Works of Hugh Nibley since 1990.
