Description: An interesting etched vintage landscape view of New York by American artist Stephen Csoka (1897-1989). The image is titled "Brooklyn Landscape" and depicts a rural and industrial view of Brooklyn in the mid-forties and includes the artist himself sketching the scene from a vantage under the trees. The etching is hand signed and titled in pencil by the artist, it was published by the Society of American Etchers in 1945, included is the original cover sheet with an essay by John Taylor Arms. The plate measures 8 1/2 × 11 inches, sheet size is approx. 11 3/4 x 14 1/4 inches and it is printed on cream colored laid paper. Excellent condition and ready for framing. He was born in Hungary and attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Budapest from 1922-1927. By 1933, he was working full time as an artist and gaining recognition in his home country. Csoka emigrated to the US in 1934 in the midst of the Depression and could only find work as a housepainter. In 1940, he won the grand prize at the Washington Square Art Show and found a patron at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in New York, which mounted his first one-man exhibition in America. Csoka's work was well received and he became a member of the National Academy of Design, the Society of American Etchers, the Audubon Artists Association and the Pastel Society of America. He taught at the Parsons School of Design, the National Academy of Design School of Fine Arts, and at the Fashion Institute of Technology. A 100 year retrospective exhibition of his artwork was held in 1997 at the Hofstra Museum of Art. Works by Csoka can be found in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts - Houston, the British Museum, the Currier Museum of Art, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Library of Congress.
