NEWFOUNDLAND 104 1911 1c YELLOW GREEN QUEEN MARY ROYAL FAMILY ISSUE MPH

Description: NEWFOUNDLAND 104 1911 1c YELLOW GREEN QUEEN MARY ROYAL FAMILY ISSUE MPH Please read the TERMS OF SALE below prior to bidding. BID WITH CONFIDENCE - SATISFACTION GUARANTEED NEWFOUNDLAND 104 1911 1c YELLOW GREEN QUEEN MARY ROYAL FAMILY ISSUE MPH One cent, Queen Mary, (Mary of Teck - Duchess of York, Princess of Wales, Queen consort to King George V) with Rundell* tiara, from the Royal Family, King George V coronation issue of 1911, yellow green shade from the first printing order (this is actually the scarcer of the 2 listed shade varieties). There are at least 7 perforation varieties reported for the Royal Family issue - 6 for the yellow green stamp but only 2 for the blue green shade. Approximately 30% of original gum disturbed by previous hinging, hinge remnant. Sound, fault-free example of this Newfoundland stamp. Stamp shown is a good representative of those that are available. If the stamp received fails to meet expectations, it may be returned for a replacement or full refund. *Princess Victoria, Mary of Teck (1867-1953), Duchess of York upon her marriage to Prince George in 1893 became the Princess of Wales in 1901 and Queen consort when Prince George became King George V in 1911. Queen Mary was engaged in late 1891 to marry Prince George's older brother Prince Albert Victor but Prince Albert died of influenza a few weeks later on January 11, 1892. As the Queen consort, Mary was strongly involved in charitable causes particularly during World War I. After the war she founded the Queen's Work for Women Fund. The stamp image is apparently based on a "doctored" 1896 photograph taken by John Thomson. In Thomson's original photograph, Queen Mary is shown wearing the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" tiara. Using photographer's self-blending retouch ink, Thomson artfully made a new image replacing the original tiara with the Rundell tiara that belonged to Queen Alexandra - Queen Mary's mother-in-law. However, it is very unlikely that Queen Mary actually ever wore the Rundell tiara. Intaglio printed from engraved plates on medium weight, crisp, white wove paper with horizontal mesh, white (almost colorless) gum. The designs of this issue were produced in relatively small formats resulting in stamps being printed very close together. Most stamps have very narrow margins or none at all with perforations cutting into one or more sides. Stamps with reasonably decent centering and perforations clear of the design on all sides may be considered as very fine for this issue. The June 19, 1911 coronation of King George V provided members of the British Commonwealth opportunities to commemorate the event through the production of new stamp issues. Newfoundland lead the way with an unprecidented set of stamps depicting all the members of the Royal household - some for the first (and only) time ever. The 11 stamp set included 10 Royal portrait images plus a 15 cent high value stamp featuring the Newfoundland Colonial seal, officially granted by King George IV in 1827. This "Great Seal of the Colony" depicts Mercury, the god of commerce, presenting to Britannia, a fisherman bearing gifts from the bounty of the sea (Newfoundland's life blood). The central image repeated that designed by Raymond Ostrander Smith (1873-1933) for the 30 cent value of the 1897 "Cabot" issue. It is widely held that Whitehead, Morris and Company Limited (Whitehead, Morris and Company did not have the equipment necessary to print stamps from engraved plates), contracted with Perkins, Bacon and Company to print the 1c 2c, 3c, 4c, 5c, and 10c value stamps from dies and engraving plates produced by De La Rue and Company of London. Printing of the 6c, 8c, 9c, 12, and 15c higher value stamps apparently was sub-contracted to A. Alexander and Sons Limited of London using dies and engraved plates provided by MacDonald and Sons. Images should provide all the information necessary to make a reasonably intelligent bid on this lot. I am confident that a mutually satisfactory solution can be worked out to any problem that might develop. Please give me a chance to fix something that is not satisfactory to you before leaving negative feedback.
