Description: NEWFOUNDLAND 173 1931 2c RED S.S. CARIBOU THIRD PUBLICITY ISSUE VF MPH Please read the TERMS OF SALE below prior to bidding. BID WITH CONFIDENCE - SATISFACTION GUARANTEED NEWFOUNDLAND 173 1931 2c RED S.S. CARIBOU THIRD PUBLICITY ISSUE VF MPH 'S.S. Caribou', 2 cent value from the re-engraved 1931 'Labrador Publicity' issue, engraved, Coat of Arms watermark (position 5). Red, perf. 13.8x13.8 (total of 7 perf varieties of this issue reported to date, only 2 of the 2 cent value). Printed on medium weight, white wove paper with horizontal mesh, whitish (almost colorless) gum. Excellent color and appearance, well centered. Approximately 15% of original gum disturbed by previous hinging, hinge remnant. Sound, fault-free example of this Newfoundland stamp. The S.S. Caribou was specially built in 1924 in the Netherlands for the Newfoundland Government Railway. Launched from Rotterdam in 1925, the vessel was equipped with a doubly thick hull to contend with the ice normally encountered in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Caribou maintained a mail, freight and passenger service from 1925 to 1942 between Port aux Basques, the western terminus of the Newfoundland Railway, and Sydney, Nova Scotia, the eastern terminus of the Canadian National Railway. On the night of October 14, 1942, the S.S. Caribou was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-69. In 1927, the British Privy Council, over Canada's objection on behalf of Quebec, confirmed the Dominion of Newfoundland's historical claim to Labrador. Newfoundland used the reward to publicize it's significantly enlarged landmass through a new series of stamps that hopefully would encourage additional tourism and economic development. The first of 3 series of stamps known as the "Publicity" or "Pictorial" (sometimes "Newfoundland-Labrador") issues were printed in 1928 by De La Rue and Company of London. Soon after this printing, De La Rue lost it's contract to John Dickson and Company but refused to turn over the engraving plates to the new contractor. John Dickson then asked Perkins, Bacon and Company to produce "re-engraved" plates of most of the 1928 images which were subsequently used to print the 2nd Publicity stamp series in 1929-1931 and the 3rd Publicity issue in July of 1931. Paper watermarked with the Newfoundland 'Coat of Arms' was used for the first time in the printing of the 3rd Publicity issue. Images should provide all the information necessary to make a reasonably intelligent bid on this lot. However, if it doesn't live up to your expectations you are always welcome to return it for a full refund - NO QUESTIONS ASKED. My feedback speaks for itself. I am confident that a mutually satisfactory solution can be worked out to any problem that might develop. Please give me a chance to fix something that is not satisfactory to you before leaving negative feedback. Although 3 and 4 star DSR scores may be considered "good" by just about any reasonable standard, they aren't as far as ebay is concerned. Anything but 5 ratings in a seller's DSR score may impact their ability to offer items for sale on ebay. Therefore, having an opportunity to earn your highest rating would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your consideration. TERMS OF SALE SHIPPING/HANDLING/INSURANCE: Within the USA - $.85 cents, all other countries - $1.85 PAYMENT: payment by PayPal only. Placing a bid indicates that you have read and accept the terms of sale. Please don't hesitate to contact me through the "Ask Seller A Question" link on eBay if you have questions concerning a lot. Due to a proliferation of fake eBay email messages, I will not respond to questions sent directly to my email address. Constructive comments and notification of possible oversights or errors in descriptions are always welcome. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST AND GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR BIDS.
