Well, the front and top part is not. The bottom is fantastic still! Disc is immaculate. I remember when I made my Dad buy this game. Dad had just picked up a kick-ass PC in 94, well to me it was kick-ass. It rocked an Intel 486 Proc at 66 Mhz. Trying to remember what it had for graphics chops but I know it obviously had a pretty good dedicated GPU, a sound card, more than enough memory. I'm talking Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Dark Forces, Star Crusader(I loved that game!!!!), Duke Nukem 3D, X-Wing, Tie FIghter, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, Warcraft II!!!!!!.....my Dad played flight sims like Aces Over Europe and Aces Over the Pacific on it. To me this was the pinnacle, the ultimate, the mecca of gaming. And it cost like $2500!!! One day at our local Kmart, I spotted NHL 95 for PC. Checked the back and it looked awesome!. Looked at the requirements. First thing I see, Intel 386 processor at 33 MHZ. Please, we have double that shit. And a 486. So, I turned to my Dad and said, "Dad, NHL on PC!. It looks awesome! And our computer will kill this thing. And you got that game pad for PC. We have to get it!" He looks at me and says absolutely not, it is going to be a headache. What do you mean a headache? 486. 66 Mhz. We killin it Papi!!!!! He told me that there is going to be some conflict with the drivers. The game pad won't work. Or the game just won't load up because of this damn conflict. The sports games like this were made for the consoles he said. I looked at him with a puzzled look like I didn't know wtf he was preaching about. He then went on to get the game. Maybe to prove a point. Because when we got home to install this thing, he was absolutely right! It took forever to get the game going. Half the time it wouldn't load up past the first screen after a game or mode was setup. Sometimes the controller wouldn't work at all. But you could use keyboard. Lame. And sometimes it just worked perfectly. It was really a mystery to me. Cause sometimes it worked perfect. Other times, it just refused. It did look fantastic however. Played well too. But it wasn't much better than the Genesis version in the end. The gameplay was almost a tad better on Genesis. That is when I learned, that back in 1995, certain games were just made for console. And some were made for PC. However, it wasn't but just a few years later that we had a Pentium computer with Windows 98, and enough CPU and GPU power to play the original Half-Life and the like. And I had NHL 98 and NHL 99 on the PC, they worked perfect, and they looked way better than my Playstation versions. That PC was also the beginning of game emulation for me. Super NES and Sega Genesis primarily. Now, Retro Arch allows me to have any system I want under one roof and organized perfectly!! Fantastic! Just incredible! Long live Retro Gaming!!!!!!! Please lend your love and support for retro PC games. Especially the big box versions. Each and everyday that passes their suffering WILL increase. This is an urgent and dire time for them. Their most desperate hour.
