Super performance. ** Acquired from the estate of George Longstreet, a renowned collector of fine original artwork and prints whose collection has appeared in dozens of museums and exhibitions over the last four decades. Having since a very young age had a propensity for drawing, Charlet entered the studio of the eminent painter Baron Gros and soon released the first of these lithographed drawings which finally brought him fame. His "Grenadier de Waterloo", 1817, with the motto "The Guard dies and does not tear" (a famous phrase often attributed to Cambronne, but which he never uttered, and which can not, perhaps, be attributed more far as this lithography by Charlet), was particularly popular. It was only around 1822, however, that he began to be successful in a professional sense.
