Henry Walter bates, British 1854 – 1948, was a founding member of the Leicester Society of Artists. Working in watercolours, he painted extensively, with many landscapes of the north Wales peninsular, Snowdonia and the Welsh coastlines. It was in 1880 when a group of friends met in Leicester to discuss fine art. By the end of the year, they assembled with their sketches and the Leicester Society of Artists was born. The artists’ inaugural formal meeting was held on July 25th 1881. Bates, one of the founder-member artists played an active role within the society right up to his death in 1948, working alongside luminaries such as its first Honorary Secretary, the heraldic designer and painter Thomas Charles Barfield (1858 – 1942). Bates apparently exhibited his paintings, once at the Royal Academy in London, four times at the Dudley gallery and the Walker Art gallery in Liverpool although we have not verified that information independently. Many examples of the work of Henry Walter Bates can be seen on artprice.com, findartinfo.com and the sites of several provincial auction houses. Presented in very good condition in a later frame, this painting looks fabulous displayed Terms of Sale The gallery at ColstarTV offers fine art, decorative art and prints, vintage photography, entertainment memorabilia and militaria.
