Description: For sale is a Northwest Coast cedar carving on stand with the image of a bear. In NWC mythology, the bear is one of the most prominent figures in crest and shamanic art and myths. The physical characteristic of bears such as standing, size, appearance and the behaviors of gathering plants and berries and caring for their young make them a close relation to humans. Therefore, they are considered a link between the human and non-human animal realms, as well as between the secular a and supernatural realm. Due to their fierceness and strength they are often the guardians, protectors and helping spirits of warriors. Bears are often depicted with a wide mouth lips and sharp teeth, broad snout, squared ears, ovoid eyes and large clawed hands and feet which this carving represents very well. This carving is stained indicating a Salish cedar carving from the mid 20th century. It seems to be the bark of the tree and so it is not flat across but somewhat wavy. The carving is deep and well done. The cedar pattern is quite prominent. This is a fairly large piece 17 1/2 inches high X 10" wide: the base itself is 14" W X 5 1/2 inches. It is signed to the base illegibly. I have been selling native art on ebay since 1999 so buy with confidence. Thank you for looking and please follow my store as new art is added often.
