Description: This is a rare and very interesting Northwest Coast, Oweekeno peoples Shaman's rattle (Central Coast of British Columbia). This old specimen dates to the 1920s or a bit earlier. It is unsigned. The beautiful Red Cedar wood has oxidized to a glossy dark coffee-brown hue; there's good surface patina here and there. Animal glue holds the two halves together. What's quite interesting about this rare rattle is the Shaman's artwork on both sides. It's a visual representation of his vision in the spirit world (during his trance stage). The last time I saw one of these was about 15 years ago. It's good to see another after a long time!!! A rare survivor!!! *** This is a genuine, important and old Northwest Coast artifact. It's not some trash Indonesian copy. Measurements: Length is 11 inches; width is 3 inches.
