Description: Notes on Nursing: What It Is An what It Is Not by Florence Nightingale (1820-1910). First American edition in original pebbled brown cloth with blind-stamped gold lettering. Publisher: D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1860. Ends of spine with loss else a fine binding. Yellow endpapers. Contents clean and bright but with light toning with age. Riggs Library stamp on title-page and page 33., 140 pages plus ads in the rear. 5 ¼ x 8 inches. Nightingale established her reputation as a skillful manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, where her efforts to improve sanitation, hygiene, nutrition and general living conditions resulted in a drastic reduction in the death rate among wounded soldiers. In 1860 she founded her training school for nurses, following the publication the previous year of the present work, which transformed nursing and health care and served as the standard introduction to the profession. Included here are chapters on ventilation and warming, health in houses, petty management, noise, variety (environment), nutrition, bed and bedding, light, cleanliness of rooms, personal cleanliness, chattering hopes and advices, and observing the sick. The record of Nightingale's experiences as a manager of nurses in the Crimean War, the book was heavily relied upon during the American Civil War. A very nice copy of a scarce item.
