Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph Notorious Cafes Chantant of MontmartreVintage George Wharton Edwards Paris Illustration, 1924 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Montmartre is a large hill in Paris's northern 18th arrondissement. It is 130 m high and gives its name to the surrounding district, part of the Right Bank. Montmartre is primarily known for its artistic history, for the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur on its summit, and as a nightclub district. Among the streets of Montmartre were the cafes. One type was the "café chantant," where songs, monologues, dances, little plays and farces (not always in the best taste), were provided to amuse the frequenters. Many of these cafés chantants were in the open air.~~~ A color illustration (printed in high quality coated stock) with its original captioned tissue guard covering. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
