Note his medal is incorrectly named Donohue when it should be Donehue, further his service # is 2017 however the medal and roll displays 2072!WW1 serviceHe appears as a member of the Australian Naval and Military Expedition with the service # 212. He states his previous service in South Africa as 18 months, enlisting on 11/8/1914 he served as part of ‘B’ company who seized German New Guinea from the Germans in 1914. He discharged time expired on 4/3/1915. However, he re-enlisted on 12/3/1915 but discharged within the fortnight at his own request. He enlisted for the final time on 16/4/1915 with the 6th Reinforcements 1st Battalion with the new service #2229. He deployed to Egypt leaving Australia in June 1915. He was taken on strength of the 1st Battalion on Gallipoli on 6/8/1915 and was killed the next day, during the Battle of Lone Pine on 7/8/1915. He is buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery. PLOT TWIST !His widow wrote to the authorities declaring that the man buried at Lone Pine was his brother Archie Victor Donehue who had previously used his brothers name to serve with the A.N. & M Force. And just too muddy the waters further his mother had also written to the authorities demanding his medals as his widow (since remarried) was a person of bad character! It is possible that Archie had enlisted under his brother’s name to abandon his wife and two children? The real Edward Douglas Donehue died on 30/7/1962 in Burwood, N.S.W.
