Description: Here we have a highly desirable item for fans of the brilliant and unpredictable sounds of aural alchemist Steven Stapleton, aka NURSE WITH WOUND… and the groovetastic space sojourns of Marxist popsters STEREOLAB: Crumb Duck, a UK import CD released in 1996 by Stapleton's own United Daries label (via the World Serpent combine), now long out of print. This disc is the expanded version of a 10-inch NWW/Stereolab collaborative EP, released three years earlier on Clawfist Records. The CD adds three Nurse tracks that do not feature Stereolab: both sides of a 1992 seven-inch, and a ten-minute piece from the 1989 Bead to a Small Mouth compilation. The two lengthy pieces where both acts pitch in together are the heart of this CD, though. Essentially, Stapleton takes the Stereolab songs "Jenny Ondioline" and "Golden Ball" into his studio and reworks them radically, creating entirely new works from the original source material. It's a rare collaboration between two vastly different artists that shows off the best qualities of both: the hooky drone-pop of Stereolab sucked into the surreal, anything-can-happen vortex of Nurse with Wound. One especially bracing moment occurs in "Animal or Vegetable (A Wonderful Wooden Reason)," when Stapleton throws in a musical quotation of Krautrock pioneers Faust (from their immortal "Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl"), to whom he pays fond tribute in the subtitle of the piece. Nurse and the 'Lab would work together again a few years later on the "Simple Headphone Mind" 12-inch single… but the eighteen-minutes they conjure up on this disc remain definitive, and a must-own for fans of either. The three Nurse tracks are uniformly excellent as well. Crumb Duck was lost from the catalog with the demise of World Serpent, with no plans to restore it to catalog anytime soon. The disc shows very slight wear, but looks great and plays flawlessly.
