Sherman served in the Mexican War in 1846 and, when gold was discovered in California, came north from Mexico arriving in San Francisco in 1849. He departed immediately for the Mother Lode country and made a sketch of Sutter's Fort. In 1852, while working as city clerk in Sonoma, he made a retrospective drawing of the raising of the American flag at Sonoma in 1846.
