His first education in arts must have been between 1940-1942 at the Ukraine Academy of Arts in Prague and after the war between 1945-1950, he seriously studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. His teachers were prominent Czech artists Vladimir Pukl and Vladimir Silovsky. Between 1950-1968 he was a member of the Alliance of Czech artists Hollar and his exhibitions at home and abroad was with this organisation. Oberthor’s drawing and his engraving regarding a drawing and his painting appear to develop from a naturalistic perspective of the world to simplicity of the modern symbolism. He strove from the start to express reality as he objectively saw it. There could be old Sud Czech villages with their changing from the spring to the winter rural landscape and a classical still life with some multicoloured flowers and a bowl with vegetables. Between the subjects of his works could appear a lucky peasant and a country heavy drought-horse and a race-horse. It appears to be a race-horse as a symbol taking in the work of academic painter and graver Charles Oberthor a very unambiguously place. This horse symbol seems to be changed in the course of time and a country heavy drought-horse was replaced by a race-horse taking place in the steeplechase (impressionist colours and suggestive mood of public and strong sense of atmosphere) to be substituted at the end with a dream-horse, which arose in painter’s fantasy. His dream-horse has become firmly embedded in the playful world of poesy where peace, a rest and a fabulous balance reign. Also, a lost paradise comes into being, which lives in the sensitive unconsciousness of everyman and everybody would like to find for self. In a garden without boundaries, a stately stallion runs near a white mare with making mischief foals an embedded in dream girl saw her dream and a faun plays for her his unheard melody. Plants were represented with a symbolic trunk and a paradise flower. A fabulous bird with gold feathers ascends to the high on completing so a harmonic whole of the dream paradise. Oberthor’s drawing follows along two lines. The first of ones is a reality to which belong working sketching from his voyages and drawings for study. The second is a technical one. A technical drawing is very constructive because the author strove to find new ways to simplify a complicated reality for attending symbolic shortness. With maturity, he develops elegance of form individuality of style and sensitive and precise observation.
