Description: Bodrogi, Tibor (1959). Oceanian Art. Budapest, Corvina This is a seminal early publication on the art of the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Polynesia, Micronesia, and Indonesia with 160 photographs and ten color plates of objects in the custody of the Ethnographical Museum of Budapest. The selection is particularly strong in Melanesian art. It opens with an essay on each region and continues with a fully-illustrated catalog with each object accompanied by an informative caption. Please note: This is the original 1959 edition! Not the 2021 reprint. [from book's flap] TIBOR BODROGI: OCEANIAN ART Oceania is beyond doubt one of the most interesting areas in the world with regard to primitive art. Although the products of West-African wood carving and bronzesmith's art, and Indian sculpture of Northwest America may be considered as aesthetically superior, nobody can deny that, as regards variety of artistic representation, richness of formal expression and colourfulness of artistic ingenuity, Oceanian, especially Melanesian, art occupies a most prominent place. The work of Tibor Bodrogi, curator of the Ethnographical Museum, Budapest, on Oceania's primitive art is an endeavour to bring closer to European readers this varied, many-coloured world. The author's principal aim is to present the characteristic features of each style province and to reveal the social and religious roots of the different art forms. The author explains that these objets d'an are not mere exotic curiosities, however unfamiliar and strange their form and the ideas expressed through them may appear to us. We are made to feel that here, too, as everywhere and always, art strives to grasp reality and express human aspirations. The value of Tibor Bodrogi's work is enhanced by the fact that the 170 illustrations which adorn the book they have been selected by the author and include ten colour plates-are in the main hitherto unpublished works of art and that, moreover, it discusses style provinces neglected and types unknown so far. The book gives at the same time a good cross section of the Budapest Ethnographical Museum's Oceanian collection which contains not less than 19,000 specimens representing the art of the times before the culture change, and forming part of the authentic collections of Hungarian explorers.
