Description: Handsome fold-out 1953 official state highway map of Maine, with pictorial comic artwork, printed more than 70 years ago. This map opens to a generous 25" x 34" and has great detail on old road alignments, including U.S. Routes 1 and 2. There are inset plans of Kittery, Rumford, Bangor-Brewer, Auburn-Lewiston, Augusta, Saco-Biddeford, and Portland. On the reverse side of the map there is a list of golf courses, a guide to radio stations, and other information for travelers, along with colorful graphics, including a pipe-smoking fisherman astride a lobster and a hunter who looks like he'd scare away any game he might be trying to track down. The map was published by the State Highway Commission in 1953 and is dated on the cover. Condition: It is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears.
