Merchants filled the need with privately minted tokens. This emergency money was generally made in copper and commonly accepted in trade. It was distributed in the U.S. between 1861 and 1864. Civil war tokens became illegal to use in trade after Congress passed a law in 1864.Civil War tokens are most valued when in good condition for age and for their rarity.This is an original "Store Card" Civil War Token. The obverse side of this coin says, "Staudinger's, 116 Broadway, NY" and the reverse is a beauful American flag coat of arms and says, "Pluribus Unum, L. Roloff, 1863". This token is in very good condition with a rich patina'd copper color. The token measures about 24mm (almost 1 inch) in diameter. It is in very good condition with all designs highly readable.
