COLORS ARE DARKER IN INDOORS ARTIFICIAL LIGHT**** For sale is an absolutely gorgeous painting of the First Congregational Church in Old Lyme Connecticut by the Michigan/Canada artist William Greason (1884 - 1945) The church is a well-known subject for many of the artists who painted at the Old Lyme Colony school of painters in Connecticut. This church was best captured on canvas by the well regarded American artist Childe Hassam. This painting by Greason is also an exceptional example of this well known scene. The Old Lyme Congregational Church is located in Old Lyme, Connecticut on Ferry road. The church is noted as a favorite subject of Old Lyme Art Colony painters. It is affiliated with the United Church of Christ. William Greason often traveled to and painted in the Old Lyme art colony in the early 20th century and undoubtedly captured this image on canvas while there painting. The painting features a late autumn view of the church near evening as the shade from the surriundimg landscape creep up in the churches exterior. A lone subject slowly walks past the church on its winding walkways at approximately 9:20am according to the hands on the tower clock above. The colorful autumn leaves have mostly dropped for the season yet the grass remain lush and green. The color palette is wonderful. Greason was known for the array of colors he brought to his paintings. Circa 1930 in age give or take. Add a Plein Air impressionist style gold gilded frame and you'll have an absolutely beautiful Old Lyme Art Colony painting to enjoy viewing for years to come. Oil on canvas Signed by the artist lower right corner. Measurements: 36 1/4" x 30 1/8" Condition: Overall good. The painting would probably benefit from a light cleaning to brighten up the colorations. Note that our pictures were taken outdoors in natural sunlight where the colorations show somewhat brighter in pics. Indoors the painting appears a little bit more subdued in coloration. William Greason (1884-1945) The artist William Greason was born in St. Mary's, Ontario, Canada, on February 24, 1884. Seeking a career in art, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Thomas Anshutz and Hugh Breckenridge, at the Darby School in Washington, D.C., and beginning in 1905, at the Academy Julian in Paris under Bashet and Laurens. The artist officially immigrated into the United States in 1910 and settled in Detroit. He was naturalized in 1915. He was given the honor of a one-person show at the Detroit Museum of Art in 1912 and shortly after established the William Greason School of Fine Art in the Fine Arts Building. Greason was a member of the Scarab Club in Detroit, where he exhibited regularly, and the Salmagundi Club in New York. He painted extensively in Michigan and also in New Lyme, CT. The artist created city scenes and portraits of many of Detroit's citizens. Many of his landscapes, for which he was best known, were inspired by the Lake Michigan shores and in 1937 he and his wife Pearl - they had just been married in 1930 - established the Greason School of Painting in Douglas, Michigan. Pearl, an artist in her own right, continued the school after his death in 1945.
