These articles discussed the geology associated with the formations of the feldspar copper bearing Oregon sunstone. Throughout the 1990’s, and the first decade of this century, Oregon sunstone was a favorite of select collectors and faceters. GIA’s interest resulted from a significant find of large size colored rough in 2010-2011, and a realization that this copper bearing gemstone was geologically interesting and gaining acceptance by consumers and jewelers! Oregon sunstone is natural and different, than Paraiba, because copper is manifested in a phenomenon called schiller which are small copper platelets and/or copper planes that are eye visible. Schiller features are not classic inclusions because they add additional pleasing visual characteristics, just like silk in Kashmir sapphire and horsetail in demantoid. However, balance is needed because too much schiller can reduce gemstone fire. In general the most expensive faceted Oregon sunstones have minor eye visible schiller and microscopic copper platelets are smoothly integrated into the gemstone crystal. Gems with medium schiller, flash light and color as the gem is rotated. Heavy schiller crystals produce excellent carvings and cabochons.
