As you can see, this lava rock is a combination of red & black. It weighs about 13 lbs, is roughly 9½" across its base and stands over 11" tall - spokesmodel Woody says it would make an exceptional lava mountain in the right setting. Surface features include cracks, crevices, holes, and depressions, along with pockmarks in a variety of shapes and sizes. Also known as "scoria" or "cinder", it was hand-picked directly from the Springerville Volcanic Field, near the White Mountains of east-central Arizona. Those pockmarks are one of the most recognizable features of scoria. When these rocks were expelled from the volcanoes that were active here between 300,000-1.5 million years ago, hot gases were captured within the molten rock. As it cooled, the gas was trapped, leaving thousands of tiny "pores" within the rock itself. The red color resulted from its iron oxidizing during eruption.
