The pads are taken at the time of purchase so you need to let them scab over before putting them in dirt. I try to get the large spines off but they do have small one where the large ones where. The spines will grow back. Opuntia engelmanniiis generally shrubby, with dense clumps up to 3.5 metres (11ft) high, usually with no apparent trunk. The pads are green.Theglochidsare yellow initially, then brown with age. Spines are extremely variable, with anywhere from 1-8 per areole. The flowers are yellow, occasionally reddish, 58cm in diameter and about as long. Flowering is in April and May, with each bloom lasting only one day, opening at about 8AM and closing 8 hours later.
