Description: Framed Original painting by Claude Verlinde (French, 1927-2020) Painting published as a full page illustration in the book "Memoires d'un Italien" by Ippolito Nievo The book, published in Paris in 1968, contained 16 full page illustrations by Claude Verlinde. This original painting was recreated as plate number 14, opposite page 512. The description of the painting reads "Une robe decolletee et toute simple retenait des formes dont l'abondance me frappa" Translated as: "Dress low-cut and very simple retained forms whose abundance struck me". The woman in the illustration is the Contessina Pisana. Copies of the book are easily found on the internet (I bought my copy from a French Dealer, including shipping, for $20.00) but there is a wide range in prices, shop carefully. Claude Verlinde, a highly respected artist, sadly died about two years ago. He was known in 'art speak' as a 'Fantastic Realist' or 'Contemporary Magic Realist Surrealist'. If this doesn't mean much to a layman, take a look at his work on Google Images. You'll see what they mean. Some of his later works have sold in the $30- 40,000 range at auction. The record auction price to date is $100,389. for a large oil. No doubt his prices will continue to climb as he has few peers. My wife and I have owned the painting for about 30 years. It, and a companion piece, also an illustration from the same book, have been cornerstones of our modest collection and have always been proudly displayed everywhere we have lived during that time. That other painting by Verlinde is also available here on eBay. The painting is in gouache (opaque watercolor). We had the paintings re-framed when we first acquired them. Triple acid-free mats in good quality gilt wood frames and under glass. I've added all pertinent information about the paintings on the backs of each of them. It's signed by the artist, lower left. The image size (mat opening) is: 13" x 9" The overall outside frame dimension is: 20-1/2" x 16". Painting and frame is in excellent mint condition. Well looked after. ______________________________________Inv.
