Description: Here is an original centerfold illustration from Harper's Weekly magazine by Thomas Nast that is entitled Election-Day 8th November 1864. It measures approximately 16 3/8" x 22 3/4" and has been photographed with its protective plastic sleeve on, so there is a little bit of glare in the photos. However, the condition is very good. It does have a few light foxing spots in places and small edge tears and fold marks, mostly along the borders which can be easily cropped or matted out. Featured are four vignettes – the top illustration is entitled Election-Day and depicts Lady Liberty casting a vote in the presence of a forlorn angel of PEACE and two demons whose swords read TRAITORS NORTH and SOUTHERN REBELLION. Lady Liberty is casting a vote for Union and Lincoln. The bottom three vignettes are entitled Soldiers Mailing Their Votes, The Veterans Vote which depicts soldiers on the battlefield and the third, Citizens Voting with competing posters for Lincoln and Gen. George B McClellan. Along the top of the Soldiers and Citizens vignette it reads: The victory at the ballot box will be in vindication of this union and our authority, and The election of the union candidates will bring peace. Above The Veterans Vote illustration it reads: Down With Slavery NO COMPROMISE Down With The Rebels. The reverse side has an excerpt from a story serial entitled Quite Alone by George Augustus Sala. There are also some tiny pinholes from its original string binding and a 2 inch tear on the left center edge along its fold mark. Very suitable for framing which I'll leave up to you. This is a remarkable piece of ephemera from a most pivotal election. Thanks for looking at this auction.
