Description: Important early American map of Russia, published in Thomas Dobson's Encyclopædia, Philadelphia, 1791. The map is titled Russia or Moscovy and was engraved by Robert Scot and Samuel Allardice. Scot was the most prolific engraver of early American patriotic iconography, including the Great Seal of the United States and numerous coin designs for the United States Mint. Along with four apprentices, including Samuel Allardice, Scot engraved the largest number of engravings for Dobson's Encyclopædia, a re-edited version of the British edition of Encyclopædia Britannica. Dobson's patriotic initiative was recognized and supported by then-President George Washington, who ordered two sets of his Encyclopædia, one of which now rests with most of the rest of George Washington's personal library in the Boston Athenæum. Condition: This map is in very good condition, uncolored, as issued, with some minor rough spots along the edges, outside of the image area. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. This is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. The image area measures 16.9 x 21.1.cm [6¾" x 8¼"], and the distance scale is calibrated in Russian versts. Among the named places and features are St. Petersburg, Caspian Sea, Moscow, Little Russia, Nizhny Novgorod, Volga River, Kharkov, Sea of Azov, Orel, and the lands of the wandering hordes of the Kirghiz-Kazaks.
