Description: Handsome original antique engraved map titled Italia Ulterior, cujus pars australis Magna Graecia, ob Graecorum colonias, dicta, ante divisionem ab Augusto factam; cura et studio D. Macpherson, with topography drawn in relief and place names from classical antiquity. The image area measures 24 x 40.1 cm [9½" x 15¾"], and there are two distance scales in the lower corner, calibrated in Roman Miles and Olympic Stadia. The title translates to "Further Italy, the southern part of which is Magna Graecia, for the colonies of the Greeks, they said, before the division made by Augustus." The coverage area extends south from Rome, showing the regions extensively populated by Greek settlers starting from the 8th century BC, including the present-day Italian regions of Calabria, Apulia, Basilicata, and Campania. The map was compiled by David Macpherson, engraved by Benjamin Tanner, and published in Philadelphia by Samuel F. Bradford and Murray, Fairman & Company in the Geographiæ Antiquæ atlas to accompany Abraham Rees' Cyclopædia, or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature, 1824. Condition: This map is in excellent condition, with a bold, crisp impression and no rips, tears, or writing. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. This is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. The heading in the upper margin is Geographiæ Antiquæ Tab. XII. Remains of some of the independent cities established in the ancient Greek colonies can still be seen today, including Neapolis ("New City", now Naples), Syrakousai (Syracuse), Akragas (Agrigento), Taras (Taranto), Rhegion (Reggio Calabria), and Kroton (Crotone). The most populous city of Magna Graecia was Sybaris (now Sibari) with an estimated population, from 600 BC to 510 BC, between 300,000 and 500,000. The Second Punic War put an end to the independence of the cities of Magna Graecia, which were annexed to the Roman Republic in 205 BC. Buy with confidence!
