Description: Original antique lithographed reconnaissance chart of the southeast end of San Clemente Island, with a profile view, soundings, and tide table, printed more than 155 years ago. The map was published by the United States Coast Survey and is based on hydrographic surveys under the direction of Lieutenant James Alden, U.S. Navy. The image area measures 30.5 x 42 cm [12" x 16½"], and the map is drawn on a scale of 1:20,000. A large compass rose gives the magnetic variation. The map locates large areas of kelp and shows bottom conditions as well as water depths. The handsome profile view shows the steep frontside of San Clemente Island, about 70 miles off the San Diego coast. This is an important, hard-to-find chart, published just a few years after the government began its systematic mapping of the California coast. Navy hydrographer James Alden had previously been part of the United States Exploring Expedition under Lieutenant Charles Wilkes. Alden later served in the Civil War and commanded the steam sloop USS Brooklyn in the Battle of Mobile Bay. In 1871 he was promoted to rear admiral. Condition: Like many government documents of the mid-19th century, this map had been printed on a lightweight paper. To give it stability and reinforce the folds, it has been backed with Japanese tissue. It is in very good condition, with no marks, rips, or tears.
