Description: Handsome original 1860 antique lithographed map of Baltimore, printed more than 160 years ago. The map is hand colored by ward in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels, and it has a decorative finely engraved floral border. It was published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell, Jr., Philadelphia, in 1860 and is dated in the lower margin. The image area measures 24 x 28 cm [9¼" x 11"], and the coverage area extends from Baker Street to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Coal Depot on the northwest branch of the Patapsco River. Steam railroads are indicated with hached lines, and dotted lines show the routes of the city's horse-drawn streetcars. The map labels the Green Mount Cemetery — where three of the Lincoln assassination conspirators, including John Wilkes Booth, are buried, and it locates St. Mary's College, the first Catholic seminary in the United States and the Camden Street Station, today the site of the Oriole Park baseball stadium. Other named places and features include Cathedral Cemetery, Washington Monument, Phoenix Shot Tower, Susquehanna Railroad Depot, City Jail, Odd Fellows Hall, City Wharves, Mt. Clare Station, Union Square, City Dock, Pratt Street, and Exchange Place. Condition: This map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with wide margins and no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It would make a handsome display in your den or office. It would also make a perfect gift, and we'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference. The Mitchell firm was one of the leading American cartographic publishing firms in the mid-19th century. Mitchell maps are distinguished by their fine detail and attractive decorative borders.
