Description: Two original antique lithographed topographic survey maps of Pennsylvania on a single sheet, showing the isogonic lines of magnetic variation, printed more than 150 years ago. Each map is titled Chart of Iso-Magnetic Lines of Pennsylvania for 1842 and locates magnetic stations. Topography is drawn in relief, and the coverage area includes New Jersey and the adjoining parts of New York, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland. One map shows declination 1842, declination 1862, and inclination. The other shows horizontal force and total force. The maps were lithographed by Charles G. Krebs and published by the U.S. Coast Survey, under the direction of A.D. Bache, Superintendent. The image area of each map measures 19 x 24.5 cm [7½" x 9½"], and the overall size of the sheet is 10" x 23½". Condition: Like many government fold-out maps of the mid-19th century, it is printed on a lightweight paper which has toned a bit along one fold.
