Description: Handsome original antique 1888 color lithographed Victorian-era county map of Westmorland, printed more than 135 years ago. There is wonderful detail throughout, and the map shows cities,towns, railroads, wagon roads, canals, parks, railway stations, and other local landmarks, as well as parliamentary divisions and natural features in the historic county of Westmorland in northern England. Among the named places and features are Kendal, Orton, Appleby, Windermere, Kirkby Stephen, Shap, Clifton, River Tees, Ravenstonedale Common, Roman Road, Murton Fell, Lune Moor, and more. The map was drawn and engraved by noted mapmaker John Bartholomew of London and issued in the 9th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, in 1888. The image area measures 19.7 x 28.5 cm [7¾" x 11¼"]. The county of Westmorland has since been absorbed into the new county of Cumbria. Condition: The map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no rips, tears, or writing.
