Description: Original 1816 Hand Written Vellum Indenture (Deed) Shrewsbury Township, Penna. Sale of land by Gideon Shiles to Jacob Road. Both resident of Shrewsbury Township, at that time in Lancaster County. Both men appear in the 1810 Shrewsbury Tax Assessment records but a cursory internet search revealed nothing else. Since both men were around during George Washington's era, it's possible that one or both fought in the Revolutionary War. I didn't go that far, but it's what makes researching these old documents so fascinating. The document does state that Gideon was a blacksmith by trade. Jacob is referred to as a yeoman. The vellum document is in excellent condition considering its 207 year age. The fine handwriting is quite readable with very slight fading to the ink. The overall size is: 14-1/2" x 21-1/2". The vellum is structurally sound but there is a very small piece of vellum missing at one of the fold lines. It's been folded probably for the last couple of hundred years and I'll ship it that way. If you intend to frame it, any decent framer will know how to handle the vellum. __________________Inv.
