Description: From the Original Drawing in the Duke of Devonshire Collection, Plate No.54C. 1774This piece is an engraving created by Claude Lorrain, engraved by Richard Earlom, and published by John Boydell.Claude Lorrain, also known as Claude Gellee, was a French artist best recognized for artistry in "ideal landscape painting" (idealistic perspective of nature's true beauty). Lorrain often attributed his inspirations to classical concepts of Rome's countryside. Training under the well-respected Agostino Tassi, Lorrain's talent in landscape painting flourished throughout his career. His first known artwork is Landscape with Cattle and Peasants, painted in 1629. Lorrain is renowned for his perspective showcasing the conditions nature, views of the sun as it reflects on seawater and rivers from dawn to dusk. Sometimes the art market is an unpleasant place resulting from art forgeries that not only disadvantage the original artists financially, but also undermine the integrity and the quality of their artistic practice. Certainly this was a problem for Claude Lorrain (1600–82) who suffered from widespread forgery of his paintings. To circumvent this crime, Lorrain created a compendium of drawings reproducing his paintings as a record for authentication purposes. This bound book of 195 drawings (now in the British Museum) was titled, Liber Veritatis (“Book of Truth”), by John Boydell when he published them as a suite of mezzotint prints transcribed from the drawings by Richard Earlom (1743–1822). Beyond creating an inventory of his paintings from 1635 (when he commenced work on the compendium) until he died, this archive also showcases the gradual evolution of Lorrain's manner of drawing.Condition: Overall in very good condition. Toning as expected due to age. Overall paper is healthy and the impression is strong. Frame is roughly 17" x 15".
