Description: ORIGINAL! RARE HAND COLORED ! - FORTRESS TOWN of MONTISMELIANI FRANCE - PERSPECTIVE VIEW MAP - 1682 ARX ET OPPIDUM MONTISMELIANI. ( THE HEART AND TOWN OF MONTISMELIANI ) FORTRESS TOWN of MONTISMELIANI FRANCE - PERSPECTIVE VIEW MAP 1682 - Hand colored birds-eye-view perspective map with legend of the more important structures in the fortress, and in the lower right is the floor plan of the fortress. The Isere River flows through the center of the extraordinary print. In the lower area is a grand cartouche with the Goddess Fortuna. She holds the Savoyen flag in one hand and a cornucopia in the other hand. Two lions hold the coat- of-arms of Savoy. Also visible are surveyors, cartographers, soldiers, vintners and farmers. Engraved by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) Latin. It is included in the town book of Savoye published by the heirs of Joan Blaeu in 1682. The date indicates that the panorama was published as a news print in 1675 at the occasion of a siege of the fortress. In the area of Montmélian, a fortress guarding the strategic bridge over the Isère River, with an inset plan of the walls. In 1643 the writer Elie Brockenhoffer wrote: 'This is a beautiful fortress: the interior is spacious and well designed. The walls are thick and strong, fitted here and there with large bunkers. The lower or bottom section of the engraving is separated from the top and closed by a gate and a drawbridge that rises every night. The central part includes attics, cellars, gardens, stables, flashpoints, and chapel, housing for the commander and the soldiers, who number several hundred, including several dozen officers. The fort is well equipped with large and beautiful pieces of artillery'. Caught between France and Italy, Savoy (France) suffered frequently: in 1690, during the Nine Years' War, Louis XIV invaded and captured Montmélian after a short siege, destroying the fortifications in the engraving. Very Fine throughout with a light handling and a vertical center fold line. Map has narrow margins with 98% clean trims. Colors bright. Mounted in the mid 20th century to heavy paper board for framing purposes inadvertently preserving it nicely for its 342 years. Mount is slightly larger than the maps trims. Mount has rough edges from its decades of handling without a frame. In a few tiny spots on the map's edge there are a couple of small spots of wear beyond the trim. A few tiny spots of glue on the upper left corner. (please see pictures). This map would frame up nicely !
