Description: STUDY OF A GIRL, READING Original lithograph by Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema RA (1836-1912) published in "The Studio", Volume VI, 1896. LIthograph was printed by master printer/lithographer Frederick Goulding (1842-1909) for "The Studio" where it was bound in as a Special Supplement. Naturally we think of Alma Tadema, a household name, as primarily an oil painter of large-scale historical and mythological subjects - but he also made a small number of lithographs from his drawings, of which this is one. Signature of Alma Tadema in the stone Attractively printed in sanguine ink (still bright) on buff-coloured paper. The sheet is 11 x 8 inches Condition: EXTENSIVE FOXING/DAMPSTAINING. I try to show this honestly and accurately in my photos. Priced accordingly. SEE PHOTOS. A great shame because it's a lovely item. Much to enjoy about the central figure, which is relatively free of foxing. Still collectable in my view, a good image to have in a collection. Reference: British Museum has a much better one - 1905,0426.53.See also Victoria & Albert Museum London, ref. E5095-1906 A NOTE ON LITHOGRAPHY: Originally, the image to be printed was drawn with a greasy substance, such as oil, fat, or wax. or special lithographic chalk, onto the surface of a smooth and flat limestone plate. The stone was then treated with a mixture of weak acid and gum arabic ("etch") that made the parts of the stone's surface that were not protected by the grease more hydrophilic (water attracting). For printing, the stone was first moistened. The water only adhered to the gum-treated parts, making them even more oil-repellant. An oil-based ink was then applied, and would stick only to the original drawing. The ink would finally be transferred to a blank paper sheet, producing a printed page. This traditional technique is still used for fine art printmaking. The source: Published by "The Studio" Magazine 1896. Hence "lifetime". The Studio was a lavishly-produced, prestigious monthly celebration of art, to which leading and promising artists offered examples of their work. Some were commissions from the editor, too. Whistler, Beardsley, Waterhouse, Vallotton are just a few of the artists whose original graphic work was featured. The publication took lithography to new heights in the 1890s, producing superb quality images. It was a vital showcase for the work of graphic artists, who had very little opportunity to display their work in the mainstream exhibitions which were dominated by oil painters. My price is determined here by condition - not by the standard of the artwork, which is impeccable and Museum standard. One in better condition would carry a considerably higher price.
