Mike Moran lives in Washington state and teaches sculpture, drawing, and painting at Evergreen State College in Olympia. A native of Montana he counts the state and its landscape as a major influence in his art. With stylistic references ranging from Giacometti to classic Etruscan urns, Mike Moran balances ancient with contemporary to create content-rich, figurative sculpture. Moran's elongated figures are permeated with the sensation of passionate and transformative experiences of a life lived. These works evoke the recognition of a state of being, familiar and well acquainted. Applying pigmented cement to welded steel armatures, Moran utilizes the consciously weathered metal skeleton, sometimes including additions of broken glass or clay, to transfix potent and primal images to attenuated human forms. In this manner, Moran transfuses his work with animal, mystical, and visionary content. Moran is a painter, a print-maker, and a sculptor. Though he is better known for his ceramic works, his recent series of sculpture in concrete over steel armature show a deft mastery of this media, as he applies stains, etches, burnishes, and scratches his surfaces. Mike Moran has exhibited extensively in the Northwest and Northern California, and his work has been reviewed in such publications as Sculpture, American Ceramics, Studio Potter, and Ceramics Monthly.
