USN 37J1 Jacket Known as the first USN Bomber Jacket, the 37J1 jacket was contracted in 1927 by the department of the Navy. A standardized lightweight flight jacket was needed at the time for the growing crew of Airmen in the expanding Naval Aviation Forces. The jacket was developed in the mid 1920's and then issued in 1927. A green Bedford corded cloth version was developed and issued as well later on in the mid 1930's. The distinctive short snap knit collar and high set pockets of the 37J1 were made famous by the daring USN pilots who wore them while perfecting the first carrier operations. They were among the first of the American test pilots. The jackets were featured in movies about the first USN squadrons in the 1930's which help create the iconic vision of the leather clad fighter pilot in the minds of the American people. This icon was reinforced world wide when WWII brought more pilots and new leather flight jacket types into service. The First Top Guns: USN & USMC pilots wearing 37J1 jackets in 1930. The 37J1 jacket went out of service in the late 1930's when the M-422 jacket was developed. A warmer jacket was needed and zippers became reliable enough to replace the button up closure. There are very few original 37J1 jackets surviving today. They are extremely rare but a few have surfaced at auctions and there are some good photos of the details. The hide used was Capeskin leather. We have a color photo of the inside of the pocket and the leather protected inside has the original shade of brown. The original 37J1 jackets were a Chocolate color.
