Description: This is an original poster advertising the cancelled Helsinki Olympics of 1940. These posters were produced with the text in a variety of languages - this one is in Finnish. The image was created by Ilmari Sysimetsa, who won a competition to design the poster in 1938. It depicts the legendary Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi, who won 9 Olympic gold medals in middle and long distance events in the 1920s. The 1940 games were obviously cancelled due to WWII, but the poster design was later used when Helsinki hosted the 1952 games. This particular poster is in very nice condition for its age. It shows some small tears to a couple of edges. These have all been re-enforced on the reverse side with conservation paper tape. The colours are vibrant and haven't faded. It measures around 98cm x 63.5cm (38.5" x 25"). Please note that it is not mounted - it's just resting on card for the photos. It'll be securely posted in a rigid tube. Please message me if you've any questions or would like an accurate quote for international postage. Thanks for looking.
