Signed and dated lower left "S. Metford / (illegible) / 1842. Well-detailed embellishments in Chinese white paint. Framed and glazed in a simple mitered wooden frame, probably the original, with a rough sawn backboard.Samuel Metford was born in Glastonbury, England, into a Quaker family. He came to specialise in full-length silhouette likenesses, often cut from black paper and embellished with gold and white paint. Metford made some very fine family groups, sometimes with Father and Mother surrounded by their children and pets, with hand-painted backgrounds. Metford moved to America about 1834, and spent some ten years there, working mostly in Connecticut but also in New York and South Carolina. He returned to England in the early 1840s, and lived there for the rest of his life, although he revisited America in 1867 and 1869. He died at Weston-Super-Mare. CONDITION Overall excellent.
