Description: Title of the map: "ESTATS DE L'EMPIRE DU GRAND SEIGNEUR des TURQS ou SULTAN des OTTOMANS EN ASIE en AFRIQUE et en EUROPE Par Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville Geographe ordinaire du Roy Avec privilege pour vingt ans 1654" Large unusual copper engraved map of the Ottoman Empire, by Nicolas SANSON D'ABBEVILLE (1600-1667). The map, centered on the Arabian Peninsula, the Red Sea and the gulf of Aden, extends from Italy to the Caspian Sea. In inset, a small map of Algeria. The map shows the countries under the domination of the Ottomans, such as Greece, Egypt, and the Arabian Peninsula. It also contains an inset showing Algeria. We can see on the maps the towns as Mecca, Madinat, Alnabi, Ziden, Taief, Madaina, Gioffa, Codaid (Qadid), Osfan ('Asfan), Badrahenen, Ocadh ('Ouqaz) and others. Some towns are placed in the centre of the peninsula, such as Iamama, Salamia, Hagiar, and Hadrama. We can note that the name Hyaman (Yemen) is placed across all the Arabian Peninsula and Najeran (Najran) is placed approximately in the center. Active from 1627, Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville was to bring about the rise of French cartography, although the fierce competition of the Dutch would last until the end of the century. His success was partly owing to the partnership with the publisher Pierre Mariette. In 1644 the latter had purchased the business of Melchior Tavernier, and helped Sanson with financial support in producing the maps. In 1657 Pierre Mariette died, however his son, also named Pierre, co-published Les Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde the following year. It was the first folio French produced world atlas. Edition: A Paris, chez l'Autheur, dated 1654, 17th Century.
