The title of the book is handwritten by the artist. Pablo Picasso created the cover page and illustrations using a series of three sketchbooks. The technique utilized an quasi systematic use of brush ink wash. The book is reproduced on Arches paper. The drawings were printed in Mourlots Studio, the famous lithographic print house that worked with Picasso, among other artists such as Matisse and Chagal in Paris, France. The text was printed and book bound in The Netherlands for distribution within Europe. The first 32 pages comprise the introduction and the essay, both illustrated with Picasso's pen-and-ink sketches. The rest of the book reproduces the artist's sketches and lettering, variously in black, black and a second color and up to eight flat colors - sometimes on both sides of the sheet and sometimes on one side only. Some 90 heavy white sheets of paper (180 sides) are bound as mainly unpaginated printed pages or as additional endpapers. The high quality of the production was achieved through suppliers who contributed the reproduction of the illustrations, the typography, the printing (two printers, one for the photogravure sections and one for the lithography sections), and the binding. Although this copy is nearly 60 years old, the immediacy of the artist's work and quality of the pages is such that one almost believes that one is looking at original Picasso sketches. The book's covers are white buckram boards with Picasso's lettering and sketches in bright, vivid colors. The endpapers reproduce the designs and lettering of the notebook covers, while the back paste-down features an 1873 poster for the Malaga Plaza de Toros.
