They closed the gallery in 1997 and retired. * Bernard Lewin (September 30, 1906 – January 30, 2003) was a German-born American citizen who amassed the largest private collection of modern Mexican art in the world. Prior to his death in 2003, Lewin and his wife Edith donated more than 2,000 works of art worth over $25 million[1] to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Lewin was a personal friend of Federico Cantu Rufino Tamayoand David Alfaro Siqueiros. Lewin's collection included the only portrait of Frida Kahlo by Diego Rivera that was not part of mural. Brief Picasso biography: The Spanish painter, graphic artist, and sculptor studied art in La Coruña, Barcelona, and Madrid. In 1900 he began making trips to Paris and finally settled there in 1904. In 1907, after the Blue and Rose Periods, he painted the Desmoiselles d'Avignon, the first major Cubist work. He began using collage techniques and making sculptures in 1912.
