Jan Frederik Pieter Portielje (Amsterdam, 20 April 1829 - Antwerp, 6 February 1908) was a Dutch-Belgian painter. About artist: His oeuvre includes portraits, representations of elegant ladies in the garden or park, in luxurious interiors (lady alone, two ladies, lady with child, two children; with an anecdotal information such as writing or reading, admiring a drawing, a flower or a piece of jewellery, preparing for the ball, playing on mandolin or guitar...). The interiors are either heavy neo-baroque or elegant Napoleon III. Furthermore, women's busts, both representations of Western and of Southern or Oriental types, often covered with jewels. His painting style is realistic with an eye for detail and texture representation. It is meant to work as an elegant genre painting without much depth. He had a major exhibition at the Exposition Internationale d'Anvers (1894) and regularly participated in the exhibition of living masters from 1848 to 1888. Outside Belgium and the Netherlands, his works can be seen in the Alfred East Art Gallery in Kettering and the Bendigo Art Gallery in New South Wales.
