Description: 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition so-called dollar H-K 401, gold-plated bronze, 38 mm diameter. The piece was issued to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. The obverse shows Winged Mercury opening the locks to the ship ARGO, the symbol of navigation. The reverse shows two females, representing the two hemispheres, entwined around the globe. The legend around the obverse shows "TO COMMEMORATE THE OPENING OF THE PANAMA CANAL MCMXV". At the bottom is "ON ! SAIL ON !". The reverse legend shows : PANAMA-PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA MCMXV". The original loop is attached at 12:00. The color is still bright gold, and shows some light handling and contact on the highest surfaces of the figures and some of the design features. There is a single fine line scratch on the reverse coming from around the 2;00 o'clock position near the rim, down to the body, under the arm of the female on the right side. A couple of very light brush type marks can be seen below the eagle's wing to the right.
