Description: Paphiopedilum Complex Hybrids[PLEASE NOTE: THESE PLANTS ARE NOT IN BLOOM WHEN SHIPPED] “Red” flowered Paphiopedilum complex hybrids are also known as standard, or for some reason, “bulldog” hybrids. (If you’re around high-end collectors, please don’t call these paphs “bulldogs” — it’s a definite faux pas.) But whatever you call them, there’s no denying that there’s nothing “standard” about them — they are the best and incredibly beautiful. Paphiopedilum “complex” hybrids represent one of the pinnacles in flower breeding. The incredible assortment of colors and patterns seen in the blooms of these hybrids is beyond belief. In the orchid world, some of the priciest orchids ever sold have been Paphiopedilum complex hybrids, with prices into the $10,000 range. In reality, most of the most expensive orchids ever sold have been Paphiopedilums. Why are these orchids so desirable? They look incredible, almost unreal. Some look like they have been carved out of alabaster and polished. Many times at orchid shows I would be asked if these were real. Lots of folks could not resist touching!They produce large flowers, almost the size of an adult hand.The blooms are long-lasting, sometimes staying open for three or four months (under the right conditions).They are each one of a kind, as the secret to large-scale cloning of slipper orchids has not been discovered. Each one is a unique individual. We're offering here Paph red-flowered complex hybrid plants, about one to two years away from reaching full blooming size. (These are NOT in bloom when shipped!) A couple of features distinguish red complex hybrids from other paph complex hybrids: 1) Some pouches look like they are made from polished mahogany wood.2) Red complex hybrids have an attractive spotting pattern with raised pigmented bumps, as if from a van Gogh painting. Others have background colors looking as if they were painted on by a watercolor artist.
