Description: "Passing Strange" was one of two musicals that opened on Broadway in the 2007-2008 season with a somewhat autobiographical edge. The other one was "In the Heights", a show that made rap and hiphop work as an idiom for musical theater and all in all has a beautiful score telling a tale filled with emotion. "Passing Strange" tries to appeal less to the heart and more to the mind - I think. I know the book for "Passing Strange" won the Tony Award, and the show itself won the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical among others. Still, judging from the CD, it must have been a mess. There is a lot of intellectual name-dropping throughout the show, and I suppose Stew, the author, knows what he is talking about - but does the standard audience? Also, the music mostly sounds loud. There are a few almost charming numbers, "We just had Sex" is one. But other than that, there are a lot of bad rhymes and wrong stresses in the lyrics (which occurred in "In the Heights" as well, but somehow that show is lovely, while "Passing Strange" isn't). On disc, Stew does sound fairly charismatic but that certainly is not enough. Enjoy the music.
