Description: PASTURES NEW A WILDFOWLER NATURALIST EXPLORES NORTH-WEST GERMANY. WRITTEN AND ILLUSTRATED by JEFFERY G.HARRISON H. F. & G, WITHERBV LTD 1954 1st edition. 22 x 15 cm. xv + 172 pp + colour frontis and b/w photo plates. HB/DJ Pastures New is the story of a wildfowler, naturalist and artist, who found himself posted to North-west Germany for two years' service with the Royal Navy. The sport he found there was superb, as those who have read his previous book Estuary Saga will already know. The present work is much wider in scope, covering not only the Estuary of the Elbe, but ranging from Heligoland to Sylt and Borkum; from the great goose marshes of the Jade Basin and Ems land, to the inland deer forests and the tideless shores of the Baltic. Much of the emphasis is on the natural history of the area, for in his explorations the author encountered many creatures with which he was unfamiliar at home and such species as Wild Pig, Musk Rat, Rough-legged Water Bat, Egyptian Vulture, Ferruginous Duck, Avocet, Great Black Woodpecker and many others find mention, as do the vast bird migrations which span the whole area. The book is illustrated by the author with water colours and many pen-and-ink sketches as well as maps and photographs and contains numerous stories of shooting, stalking and watching birds and beasts, and even hunting communist "squatters" on Heligoland.
