Description: Backgammon (2004 Edition) by Paul Magriel and Renée Magriel Roberts. Hardcover book with dust jacket, pp. x (foreword), 404. 2004 edition with a new foreword by Renee Magriel Roberts. Backgammon is the most highly-regarded work on the subject, often referred to as "The Bible" of the game. Written between 1973 and 1976, Backgammon was the first book to lucidly explain the inner workings and advanced positional play of the game. The most important aspects are broken down into their component parts and then explained with a unique, easy-to-understand, step-by-step building-block approach. The book is enhanced by 600 clear and precise diagrams, a glossary and tables, including the betting odds. For any player who means to take the game seriously and wants to play well, Backgammon is an indispensable guide. This new 2004 edition of also includes a lively behind-the-scenes foreword by Renée Magriel Roberts that illuminates the man behind the name "X-22" and describes the creation of the book. Having stood the test of time for over a quarter-century, Backgammon is still the best and most widely recommended and quoted standard instructional manual and reference work on the game for novice and expert alike. New in new dust jacket. Renée Magriel Roberts has signed the book on the title page. Dear Fellow Players, My name is Renée Magriel Roberts, Paul Magriel’s first wife and co-author of Backgammon. Like you, I have been trying to cope with the loss of a man who was, and still is, so important in my life. Paul and I were not only married, but friends and colleagues for most of 55 years. So, I truly appreciate your celebration of his life. I was moved when I read the many remarks contributed to the special issue of the US Backgammon Federation magazine and honored by their request to work with me to create a short history of the genesis of Backgammon the book. What struck me was that despite all the years that had gone by, the essence of the person I fell in love with stayed constant. Paul Magriel was a player, literally a "homo ludens". The expression “homo ludens” is from a book by Johan Huizinga that reflects the manner and historical awareness with which Paul approached the study and practice of backgammon. Huizinga wrote, “…In play we may move below the level of the serious, as the child does. But we can also move above it - in the realm of the beautiful and the sacred." Paul Magriel was an extraordinary and gifted human being. He was ever the scholar, a very fine teacher, and an inspirational player of the game. We who remain could do no better as life players than to emulate Paul’s childlike sense of wonder, generosity of spirit, and search for the game’s deep structures. Renée Magriel Roberts,Paul David Magriel, Jr.'s lover, wife, intellectual collaborator, and longtime friend.
