The artist depicts figures offloading good from the boats on to the cobbled streets. Signed to the lower left. Presented in a glazed gilt frame and double card mount. On paper. Condition The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.Biography Paul Marny was an Anglo/French painter of mainly seascapes. he was born in Paris but spent at least fifty years of his long life in Belfast and in Scarborough. He first worked as a decorator of porcelain for the Sèvres factory before moving to Belfast to work for a French architect. About 1861, Marny moved to Scarborough where he taught Albert Strange and many other Scarborough based artists. Marny was a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1897-98 and he also exhibited at the Royal Academy, GI and RBSA. Paintings by him are held in the collections of Scarborough Art Gallery, Usher Gallery, Williamson Art Gallery and the Pannett Art Gallery. His unusual signature is a monogram, an 'M' split in half at the bottom of the 'V' shape. He died in Scarborough and it is possible that his given name was Charles Paul Godard because in 1874 the 'British Photographic Journal' reported that 'A Gallic brother, M. Paul Marny Godard of Paris, has obtained a patent for the application of carbon printing to porcelain or other similar substances'. Sulis Fine Art traces its origins back four generations. Benjamin Diamond opened a picture framing factory in Midtown Manhattan in the early 20th century. Originally known as Royal Art, the business worked closely with artists and museum institutions, developing a reputation for creating fine frames. Royal Art passed through the family and eventually evolved into Sulis, now run by Benjamin's grandson Bill, and his son Dan. Based in the South West of England, we source art from across the British Isles and ship worldwide. We handpick all our stock and we've grown into a ten-strong team of art historians, photographers, restorers, studio technicians and despatchers. We relocated to our Corsham studio in early 2020, leaving behind our small garden workshops in Bradford-on-Avon that had been our base for several successful years. Now located on the edge of the Cotswolds, our current home allows the team to work alongside our large catalogue of artworks, allowing us to provide you with fast global shipping and top-notch customer service. We are always striving to connect people with the art they love. Each week we add new artworks to our extensive catalogue, across all styles, subjects, colours and periods. At the heart of Sulis, we rescue and restore lost and forgotten works, giving you the opportunity to find unique pieces and discover art in a new and different way. View All Artworks View More -->
